CPRE Claim threats to Green Belt
Thu 30th Aug 2012

The CPRE are claiming that developments planned for England\'s green belt over the next 20 years will amount to an area equivalent to a town the size of Slough. The Group has published a report at the same time as rumours spread through Whitehall that the Government, in particular the Chancellor, are looking at another dilution of the planning system which they believe is a brake to economic growth. One of these is a relaxation of green belt controls, just a year after they had to back track in the face of massive opposition to such proposals in the draft NPPF from organisations such as the National Trust.

CPRE said new national planning policies requiring local authorities to allocate more than five years worth of building land for new housing mean that "in many cases" planning inspectors were "putting pressure on local authorities to allow building in the green belt to meet this requirement".
