Northumberlandia Field Trip

The second event of the BLRS Field Trip Programme for 2013 takes the society to Northumberland for a tour of the ongoing opencast restoration projects in the area.

The Blagdon Estate has carried out significant opencast coal extraction over the last 10yrs.  The extraction continues today. Sensitive restoration to recreate farmland, woodland and an historic landscape is taking place or is planned.

This event will include an active opencast site, restoration of opencast and a walk around Northumberlandia.  This is a unique piece of landscape-scale public art set in a 46 acre community park and designed by internationally renowned landscape designer Charles Jencks.  The project is known as “Restoration First” – taking an extra piece of land donated by the landowner and providing a new landscape for the community to enjoy while adjacent mining is still operational.  Our hosts will explain the works and give useful insights into the thinking behind these projects.

This is a unique opportunity to visit active and restored opencast sites which are both economically and physically linked, and to see really innovative restoration in action.
